Research Philosophy

The mission of the Tinoco group

is to perform rigorous, interdisciplinary, collaborative, and molecular-focused science at the interface of chemistry and biology that will help answer our society’s most important research questions. Our philosophy is grounded on scholarship—the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge. We will use techniques borrowed from organic chemistry, chemical biology, biochemistry, microbiology and biological engineering to discover and evolve new chemistry encoded by microbes and microbiomes, and determine how this chemistry affects human health and disease. We are committed to cultivating a supportive and inclusive research environment where everyone can succeed, regardless of their background. We believe that science is best done when the approaches of scientists, from all walks of life, are incorporated into the solutions needed to solve the most critical scientific problems. We also believe in the strength in community-based learning, and draw from one another’s strengths and backgrounds.

Mentoring Philosophy

In the Tinoco group, we recognize that each trainee carries with them unique strengths, lived experiences, cultures, perspectives, values, and customs. We also recognize that every trainee requires distinct guidance shaped by their mentoring needs. The Tinoco group’s approach to mentoring focuses on providing every lab member with individualized support, direction, and training, and promotes both intellectual curiosity and personal growth.

In practicing our mentoring philosophy, all trainees have the opportunity to fully realize their academic and career goals.
